:)
I can't help but think our thirst will finally be quenched? ;)
Besides the obvious wanting of DNF to be unveiled, what else would you guys
like to see 3dr do for Duke's 10th?
I think a bonus map pack from Charlie and crew would be kickass or an announcement that the game is being upgraded with the DNF engine.....
/fingers crossed.

Sorry I didn't get this moved over sooner. I was out sick the past two days so I didn't get the chance to pop on at all.
I wouldn't get hyped up about any DNF info. :) Seriously.
I was talking to Stephen about loading up Build and making some Duke 3D maps for fun over the X-mas break though, that would be a lot of fun.

we just have to wait "little longer".;)
I hope you are well now Charlie:)

So, the getting to bed at day 1 and coming back from work at 2 day...and suddenly seeing some new stuff scenario ;)

What about DNF maps (or parts of them) converted to build?! :D

Hope you're feeling better. I had the flu last week. Nothing like dry heaving for hours on end. :(

I get hyped up just thinking everyday we're a bit closer.

Hehe... Same here...
But i'd expect something major to be shown... Not just 2-3 screenshots, and some info... (unless this is for an article/preview)

Somehow this year, I don't think it (DNF) is any closer :(
You know why?
BECAUSE GAMING IS STUPID !
Thanks, now I feel better :)

As a new member here I have a few things to say.....
I pray for a speedy recovery on Charlie, I wish I could say I knew how you felt, but I'm almost 19 and I honestly can't remember the last time I was sick.
Also, even though the release of DNF info on Duke 3D's 10th anniversary would seem highly logical, I respect 3D Realms' decision and since we are all outsiders we have no right to tell them what they're doing is wrong-I'm sure they know what they're doing.
But just out of curiousity why would Charlie and Stephen spend there time working on Duke 3D maps when DNF is still in developement:confused: I know its Christmas break, but if they are going to be working shouldn't it be on getting DNF closer to completion? I'd love to see new build maps, especially from these two guys, but this is the kind of thing that makes other people outside of the forums laugh at 3DR(from visiting other messages boards and seeing what others had to say).
About the idea of releasing DNF maps converted to build, I really don't want that to happen because I don't want any part of the game spoiled-and if they did that I would probably not be able to resist the temptation of playing them.
BUT....a much better idea, imho, would be to do just the opposite-release Duke3D
maps with the DNF engine! I think if this were to happen it would be a win-win situation for 3DR and the public as none of DNF would be spoiled or given away, but we'd still get to see something cool and fun to play (DM anyone?:D ). I think that that would be the most appropriate way to celebrate Duke's 10 anniversary; it would be like showing how far they've come in a decade. Or maybe they could just show us screenshots of the redone maps along side shots of the orignal?
That's just my 2 cents....any thoughts or opinions?
Whatever it is(if anything) I'm sure it will be a joyous occasion for all.

Showing DN3D maps with the DNF engine would be cool, although it would consume a lot of time and work, and it would also spoil the looks of DNF. After all I think one thing worries me most; a recent Ken Silverman quote:
3DRealms doesn't really have time constraints. The way it works is: if you take too long, and some other company comes out with a game with new features, then you must suffer the delaying of your own game for several more months while you add those features...
If you want DNF released, you must stop the rest of the industry first :)
That sounds frustrating...
EDIT:
One thing came to my mind when reading my own post. If Silvermans quote is accurate, at least one thing may be cheering: DNF will be one heck of a game, deep and very replayable... I mean this game will be a milestone in gaming. I hope ;)

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I'm feeling much much better now.
There won't be any DNF maps built in Duke 3D, at least not by me. First because that would spoil them (though it could be done and just not tell anyone, har har)... and second... they just wouldn't translate very well. You can go upwards (Doom 1 to Doom 3) but it's almost impossible to go downwards.
No comment on how DNF might be unveiled again. Whatever we do, it'll come with the same love and dedication that went into the screenshots from 1999 and the movie in 2001. More this time actually. :) But like I said, you're wasting your time if you try to figure out when that might be. That's like trying to guess the number someone is thinking of, when they haven't even picked on yet, heh.
And actually, Asmodeuz is more right than he thinks when he says the reason is GAMING IS STUPID! *grin*

It's no different than us watching movies or going out for a nice dinner. People gotta have their own personal time. Nobody works or studies all day long and stays sane, and a couple weeks of time spent playing around in Duke 3D by one or two guys isn't going to affect the project. We couldn't make it significantly closer to shipping by ourselves even if we tried. :) That's why it's a team.
I assure you that there are several of us that work through Christmas break anyways, just because it's... what we do. It's genuinly fun and the break is also a time to experiment more without the entire project being instantly dependent on what we're doing day in and day out.
BUT....a much better idea, imho, would be to do just the opposite-release Duke3D maps with the DNF engine!
No matter what happens before release, SOMEBODY will be doing that after it's out. Fans, 3DR employees, etc. So there won't be a shortage of conversions.

Ken's comments were accurate at one point. We've learned a thing or two in the mean time, though.
It can be frustrating though, yes. George has expressed his own frustration with the way things were done at one time in hindsight on the 3DR and Shacknews forums as well.

Fo' Sho'.
I'm personally going to convert "Tier Drops" for the newer engine. Not because it's a good level (although it is I guess). But mostly because it's the kind of level I've been making recently.

You know, all the good things are banned ;)
I WANT TO SEE SOMETHING GODDAMMIT!!! :o :p
J/K, of course i'd love to see something about DNF on Duke3D's 10 years anniversary... But i'd actually expect something like MP or even Singleplayer levels for Duke3D, by the origianl Duke3D mappers and the price for Duke3D Atomic edition being lowered... (really, i do hope this, becasue i'm planning to Get Shadow Warrior, and Duke3D Atomic edition at this time... I Would rathersave those (probably 10$) when getting it...)

Not gonna happen..... :p
Well, I mentioned that 1000 times but itīs time, after I saw that they hire more people I canīt avoid a feeling that theyīre running out of time in some way.... (maybe the tech or the content is getting outdated again, who knows)
Especially after I saw some of the new posts from GB on the shack, while he often mixes fun with serious stuff it looks like he wants more guys as fast as possible.
^^That's why i mentioned the part with what i expected instead...
And i'd actually prefer that to happen...
DNF can wait till George feels like it... I'd want to get Duke Nukem Atomic edition and Shadow Warrior first anyway... (before any DNF thing happens... Cause i'd like to have some good ol' games to kill time with :p)

I think they just want to finish it. There is a lot of work to be done on a quality AAA title to begin with, especially with the level of interactivity in DNF.
I'm sure the tech is up to snuff.

One could write a book detailing the choices made over the course of the project, why they were made at the time, and their long term effects. In fact I would *love* to see that book written. But I want to see the project finished first.
I'm 99% sure 3DR is not going to do anything special for Duke's 10th anniversary this year... but I was given permission to do the trivia thing and give out some neato stuff. So it's kind of an unofficial celebration. Trust me, you don't want us releasing information too early, so we won't be making that mistake again, not even for the 10th anniversary.
How well does the JonoF multiplayer work now? I haven't tried it yet, but I'll bet I could get some of the guys here to pop up here on that day to play some online Duke if it's working well enough. Thoughts?

I haven't tried that yet...
But from what i've heard, it should work well...
I'd love to join a match with my 3DR fellows... :D I hate playing together with strangers... I only get them to know once, then i play against new strangers next time...:(
If someone would make a thread about this (a little Duke3D "come-together-match") with a tutorial in it...
I'd love, and appreciate that... Playing Duke3D for the first time over the internet, with people i KNOW..!:)

I have not played it much since the first version with MP which had some issues with sync that should be mostly fixed now. From the few times I have played 1on1 player games usualy work great and up to 4 players work ok. More and you may have lag issues depending on the connections of the players. But like I said I have not played any MP for a long time.

As far as I tried it out, it still have sync issues :(
I don't have it installed since december. So there's a slight chance it may work now.

It used to be worse. It was almost imposible to play more then 2 players without getting out of sync after only a few minutes in the first version.

Yeah, I'd buy that book in a second(if I could pull myself away from playing the actual game!)
And also, Charlie, when it's time, will there be special on the "Making of DNF" on G4 TV?
They did it for HL2 Doom 3 and a bunch of other high-profile titles-is there any chance it will happen for DNF?
I'd love to see it, they could do like a two hour special(seriously) and cover the entire development's story!!

Bummer on the Duke 3D multiplayer. Guess it'll just have to wait until the 11th.

It's always possible... but we aren't anywhere near thinking down that road yet. George hasn't ever seemed too concerned with events like that, but perhaps the relief of it finally being done will have him dancing in the streets. :)
