View Full Version : Duke Nukem 3D 10th Anniversary Trivia Contest: Pre-game!

Duke 3D turns 10 on the 29th. This was a big day for me as Duke 3D is what started me down the path of becoming a game developer, and that day was my first exposure. Sitting at the campus library waiting for the demo to finally be uploaded so I could then mirror it on WiederWeb will probably be one of my most vivid memories ever. Silly, I know, but it's my life so you can just keep your chuckles and snickers to yourself. ;)

I've hijacked some of the stuff we've got around here at 3DR and will be sending them out to the 5 people who can prove to be the most hardcore Duke 3D knowledge fans around. :) High score will get to pick what they want first from the list of available items, and then each person after will pick from what remains. I'm going to drag them around trying to get as many people to sign them that are relevent to the projects. So Shadow Warrior will include guys that worked on Shadow Warrior, etc. These include:

Signed copy of DNF + Signed Duke 3D mousepad
Signed copy of Prey + Signed Duke 3D mousepad
Signed copy of Max Payne 1 (PC)
Signed copy of Duke 3D Atomic Edition
Signed copy of Shadow Warrior

There will be a bonus question at the end for someone not in the top 5 to get the 3rd and final Mousepad, despite score.

DNF and Prey will come once the games are done, of course, so if you win and pick those you'll have be a little patient. No inferring release dates! :)

Anyways, what is going to happen is there will be three rounds of questions, with the first round being worth 1 point, second worth 2, and third worth 3. The higher point questions won't be harder, it's just to make the last round more excitining. I will post the list of questions each round and the first person to answer correctly in the thread will get the point. You are free to look things up any way you can find them, though I couldn't stop you if I wanted to.

You don't need to register in order to play, you just have to be able to prove that your IP is you and give me valid contact info afterwards.

I'll be putting up the time on Sunday when this will occur, but expect it to be somewhere between 4pm and 10pm CST.

If you don't want to participate in the contest itself, but have some questions you think would be interesting, by all means send them my way. There are plenty of things that happened in the Duke 3D community that I'm sure I missed out on that would make for good challenges.

If anyone has any questions toss them up!

I'm a little confused with the rules... But that's surely just me, since i never have been so good in understanding too complex conversations on english...

Anyways, i'll see if i can answer on any Questions, and i hope i'll win SOMETHING... Any of the prices are good, because i don't own any of them... yet... :D

Which part of the rules are confusing? There really aren't any rules actually. I'll just start a thread with some questions in it, people start responding with the answers as soon as possible.

I'm thinking there won't be that many people participating, so you might have a good chance. :)

That's good to hear... Becasue i was worried about the fact if i missed any possible rules... But since there aren't any, i'm fine with it...:)

I hope you're right about not many parcitipating... (not becasue i want this site to be un-popular though) Always, when i enter the camera caption contest, i know somehow that i won't win... Usually because my english is limited at times, and because there are so many others, who makes way better captions than me... *cry*

I was about to purchase the mousepad together with Shadow Warrior at the 3DR shop... But becasue of this, i'll wait EVEN longer...:D

Hi there... :)

Damn it seems people will be joining for the anniversary :(
Well, I wonder how difficult will the questions be?

I would of joined sooner if I had the slightest coherence and known Charlie changed his site around... But no I find out eons later like the :nipple: I am... :p

It's suppose to be a comprehensive contest in terms of questions... So ring the bell, school's back in... Can't Touch This...
(Out of all the times to have a '90s flashback).

Just kidding, GooD luck to everyone.

Sure, I'll give it a shot. I don't think I'm as rabid of as fan as some of these guys, but eh, who knows... with the lack of people playing I might actually end up wining something. :p

Nipple cookies aside... I'm going to start posting the questions up at 6PM Central Standard Time. Hopefully that works for everyone. If you can't make it, please let me know so I can see if enough people need it earlier or later and it can shift a little.

01-28-06, 09:23 PM
It will be 1:00 AM for me, but that's ok. :)
Eventually if the time was supposed to change I'd say make it 5:00 PM CST.

I may be in the most eastern time zone (GMT +1), so I think it's a preety good time for everyone.

Except ADM :p

Charlie Wiederhold
01-28-06, 09:46 PM
Ok, based on a few comments I've gotten... I've bumped it up to 2PM CST.

I can't see it taking longer than an hour/hour and a half... and if a particular question stumps everyone (I'm trying to make sure most of them are findable via Google, but not all) then I'll move on to the next set after 30 minutes have passed.

This gives the most opportunity for people in both North America and Europe at semi-reasonable times. Apologies to anyone that has to work during that time period.

Kalki
01-28-06, 11:52 PM
That's 1:30 am for me(GMT +5:30). That's the time I usually go to sleep but I think I can stay up for this with some coffee. :D Thank you for not keeping it later. Early definitely suits the Eastern hemisphere because it's only a little past Sunday. Can't comment for the Japanese though.

Not sure I'm prepared to answer Duke3D questions all that well but I'll give it a shot. :)

Micki!
01-29-06, 02:18 AM
2PM..?
That's about 11PM in Denmark... I hope i am able to stay up long enough, since my limited internet is almost running out...

Charlie Wiederhold
01-29-06, 02:37 AM
Unfortunately I can't go much earlier as several people are doing stuff (Church/work/school) prior to 2 in North America, and any later and of course everyone in Europe will be well into Monday morning. 2PM is looking like the most viable time slot.

All the questions are sorted out. The breakdown is like this:

8 "History" questions. These relate to the background history of Duke 3D and the people involved in the game.

9 "Community" questions. These are all events, people, subjects that are common to the Duke 3D community and are not necessarily related to 3D Realms directly.

7 "In Game" questions. These are obviously about stuff straight out of Duke 3D itself, that can be found out simply by playing the game.

6 "Picture" questions. I've taken images from the game and there is a question related to it.

1 "Bonus" question that should be extremely easy, about in game information. This will be only answerable by people who didn't place in the top 5.

Those categories (sp) sound very balanced imo...
It might not be so hard as i thought anyways... :) I think we all have equal chances now...

P.S. This post was made exactly 14:17 (danish time)
What is it in texas now..? (just to compare time zones)

[EDIT:]
<-- If this "time" to my left, is the time at Texas, don't bother answering the "P.S.-Question"...

I'm probably the only one here at a signifigant disadvantage, as I was only nine years old (third grade!) a decade ago and my parents wouldn't let me go anywheres near a game like Duke 3D back then, or for at least another few years. Talk about being overprotective....I guess it can't hurt to try, though.

Charlie, is your birthday really on 29th, or did you set it like that because your birth into the industry was because of Duke3d? Either way happy celebrations!

40 minutes to go... the drama!

15! (I'm going to technically start at 2:10 to give people a little extra time to get here)

I'm going to put a time limit of 20 minutes per question set now before I move on to the next round of questions. This is to make sure everything has been asked between 2-3. Just because a new set of questions has been posted doesn't mean you can't go back and continue answering previous ones in an earlier set.

So it will be 2:10 - Round 1, 2:30 - Round 2: 2:50 - Round 3. Unless alll questions are answered, then I'll move on right away to the next round.

I will mark posts that get the answer correct first, as well as modify the original post to indicate a question has been answered.

When I post the next round, I will announce it in the previous rounds, and provide a link to the post.

I suppose this means you prefer to sleep on weekends..!?

I prefer to sleep everyday! ;)

Tip: answer the ones you know right away in one post. Then, pick a random question (not the first or last) and search for it on Google. It also won't hurt to have the game ready to run so you can go in and check something out quickly. :)

It's true that we share the same birthday! Although I'm never one to believe in fate, it is kinda strange it worked out that way. Which is what makes me spending all day in a campus library waiting for the demo to be released all the more... strange. :D

Oh, and I've got "America's Atomic Bomb Tests" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009HLCLK/qid=1138564710/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-6390571-7127364?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130) playing in the background for ambience. ;)

The server logs you out pretty fast, so you might want to click the "Remember Me" box, otherwise you might try to post and have to log back in, which can cause you to lose valuable time.

Hey it made for a great Birthday present, didn't it? The shareware was your 'precious'. Btw, Happy Birthday to you and a Happy Anniversary to all the fans! I'm sleepy, typing slowly and completely unprepared for this moment if it helps. ;)

It was definitely a great birthday. Thank you very much! :)

Don't worry about typing slowly, just try to get the idea across. As long as I can tell you know the right answer and what you "meant"... credit will be given.

Also! Some questions have multiple answers (listing like 4 items). If you only know 3 out of 4, go ahead and type them up. If nobody gets all of them, the person who gets the most will get the points.

've got all the grabbag versions I have on the play list .

Good call!
