Gripe at me for this being a little crazy here. ;)

Also I'll start posting the results from each round thus far. Then post the bonus question which only people not in the top 5 can answer.

I resign from the (eventual) prize, because I put myself to shame in later rounds and also because I did saw answers to 2-3 questions before posting, even though I wanted to be honest and scrolled way down to the reply button when I saw that Charlie posted the answers.

Micki!

The only one I got right, a result of smart googling. I ought to resign from Duke3D fandom, I'm so ashamed!

Don't feel bad. 1) It was my fault and 2) You couldn't have answered that quickly without knowing most of them already, so I trust all of your points and that you would have known anyways to give credit.

So what was the LL message in the auto turret cliff-cavity in the post-submarine section, as soon as you enter Toxic Dump?

I totally forgot about that area. If anyone has build loaded perhaps they could look it up?

I was referring to the specific quote of "You're not supposed to be here"... but if there is something almost identical to that then I'll give you credit as well.

Kalki
01-29-06, 02:39 PM
Ah, forget about it.

Re Scores: Does that mean I get voted off the island? :(

Kev_Hectic: 2

Please double check with me to make sure I've got this right. There is one question that hasn't been answered right yet that I'll modify to give credit for. And then there is the bonus question.

From round 2: It's possible to go from the Red Room secret area in E1L1 into the Arcade due to a build engine bug letting you "teleport' through overlapping sectors sometimes. There is at least one more bug like this in E1L1, name it.

Charlie Wiederhold
01-29-06, 02:43 PM
"How did you get there?"

That's right. I phrased the question that way to reference the one in The Abyss. :/

"How did you get there?""...get here" That crazy LL! :)

Charlie Wiederhold
01-29-06, 02:45 PM
Ok: Bonus question. This is available to everyone *except* Gamebrain, Parkar, Christian, Yossa, and Asmodeusz.

Lol :) That was a hard one...

Micki!

"Damn, those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride"

Charlie Wiederhold
01-29-06, 02:51 PM
Charlie, the answer was mentioned in your post...

Ok. These are the items being given out. Gonna go ahead and leave out the one question from round 2.

So, Gamebrain gets first pick of which one he wants. Then we go down the list, with each person picking what's left.

Gamebrain -> Parkar -> Kristian -> Yossa -> Asmodeusz

Charlie Wiederhold
01-29-06, 03:04 PM
To make this easier (since I think a couple of guys have already left):

If you scored at all, let me know your order of preference and PM your address to send the item to. Once everyone has let me know, and I've got everything signed I'll send them off. In case one of the top 5 doesn't respond in a day or so, I'll go down to the next in line. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you very much for popping in here. Hopefully you learned something new about Duke 3D you didn't know. :) By all means let me know what you would like to see done differently (besides not posting the answers with the questions, heh) as I would like to do something similar in the future, but it could definitely be improved upon. Happy 10th Anniversary to Duke 3D  !

I have PM'ed you too now Charlie...
hope i got mentioned all... This is lucky, becasue i was thinking about ordering the mouspad together with Shadow Warrior, and Atomic edition..!

P.S. As a sidenote, i'd like to know this...
Are you guys at 3DR thinknig about lowering the price of Duke3D and atomic edition, like with Shadow Warrior..? that's the reason why i haven't got it yet, becasue of a possible drop in price...

Charlie Wiederhold
01-29-06, 03:16 PM
I was asked the very good question of if there is a backup in case DNF never gets released. While obviously I don't see that happeninig, I can certainly see someone not being patient to wait for it. :)

Later in the year I'll contact the person that picks DNF and if they decide they would rather switch to something they can get now, that'll be ok, and we'll work out what it is then. This forum isn't going anywhere though, so it won't be forgotten.

Parkar
01-29-06, 03:16 PM
This is the first time I win any contest like this. was a hard pick if I should go with Duke3D and get it now or go with DNF and get it later(way later) as first pick. The mouse pad tipped me over to DNF though :).
So my picks if the others are interested would be

1. DNF
2. Duke3D

Micki!
01-29-06, 03:19 PM
Duke3D, is that the regular version, or atomic..?

Although, this sounds kinda un-neccesary...

I'm going to try to get the Mousepads and Duke/SW out by sometime next week. Max Payne needs to be shipped overseas, so it will take a little longer. Prey and DNF need to be finished. :P

But most, as Asmo says, WID. :D

Micki!
01-31-06, 01:58 PM

Parkar: Prey + Mousepad
Kristian: Max Payne
yossa: Duke 3D
Asmodeusz: Shadow Warrior

Kalki and Micki!: Mousepad

but anyway, Congratualtions to everyone and big thanks goes to charlie because he really showed how much he cares about fans :) .

Hmm, looks like Parkar changed his preference anyway. He had otherwise told me that it was: 1. DNF, 2. Duke3D. Not that Max Payne is a bad prize :)

And don't worry Charlie, I can wait have been waiting for DNF all these years. This is the first time for me winning anything, so all is cool :)

Sorry about that, switched to get the mouse pad. Feel a bit bad about telling you I was picking Duke then switching to Prey knowing that you are a big Prey fan. Since I Picked Prey to be sure I got the mouse pad more then anything I am ok with switching the actual game with Kristian. I don't have MP1 since my brother has the copy we shared when we lived under the same roof so I am planing on getting it anyway(a signed copy would sure be even better).

I can understand if Charlie may not want to start changing the prizes around though.

P.S. Kristian, that's the first time i see you use so many smilies in your posts... Usually, you tend to express yourself with words... :D Guess it's becasue we all are happy about all this...

If I get Prey instead of Parkar then I will still be doing that :)

I will be getting Prey through Game XStream instead of retail then.

And Yes, Charlie, thanks for this awesome contest. You really care for the fans :)

Edited:

And Micki! you want me to use more smilies in My communications with you, that is noted :)

Micki!
02-01-06, 06:22 AM
Heh, it's not like i WANT you to use smilies... I just noticed the difference, from just now, and any other post... :D

Anyways, i'm a bit curious about that Game Xstream program...
Appearantly it's somewhat like steam, but i haven't tried that either...
What does it do..? If i buy it in some store, i'd like it with a box, a printed manual, and of course a CD/DVD... But what is Game Xstream doing then..? Is it downloading additional data, which can only be accessed by using the original CD key..? or how is it..?

 :nipple:

Kristian Joensen
02-01-06, 06:32 AM
How Game XStream works depends on the game. First and foremost it is a content delivery system like Steam. However it also allows the option to Stream games like you would with movies or music over the internet.

With Game XStream whether or not a game has got Online authentication is upto the developer. It allows developers to decide if they want it or not and to want extent they want it.

So games that you don't own yet, can kinda be "previewed" like a demo..?

Ahh, that's cool...

No, what it means is you can start playing before the download is completed. Steam has this feature as well btw.

Kristian Joensen
02-01-06, 06:58 AM
It COULD be used for that. The Beta version has got several Demos. What is intended for is more like that you buy a game of it and start playing within 5 minutes. You can switch back and forth between downloading and streaming at any time.

I can understand if Charlie may not want to start changing the prizes around though.

I don't mind switching... but let me make sure I understand. You'll take Max and Kristian will take Prey, aye?

The point of the mousepads was to provide something now since Prey and Duke weren't out yet. If you both are cool with that then I'm cool with it. It's no different than if I sent them to you as is and then you swapped them yourselves. :)

As for the contest and caring about the fans... well remember, when Duke 3D came out I was sitting on the other side of the forums, and the 3DR guys were very generous with me. It's nice to be able to give it back in return. You guys have no idea how much your support and never-ending optimism means in the long run for some of us who have stuck out this project for the long haul. :)

Oh yes we DO know... That's why we're such loyal fans...:D
On the other hand, we wouldn't be loyal, if it wasn't becasue we DIND'T know... But then again... We were also loyal BEFORE you guys needed this kind of hardcore fan-support...

BUT, that would mean my first point is invalid, as we were loyal from the beginning...

Or did i get it all wrong..?
Crap, i confused myself...

Duke 3D was a great experience. Since I finished it, I would occasionally pop up at the forum (firstly on at the 3DR UBB classic) and see if there is some info on Duke 3D 2. Then I found it was DNF. Then I saw the first stuff in 98. Then more great stuff in 2001. But it was in around 2003 when I got really involved. The screens and vids scrapped, the engine change announced etc. I tought, damn, I've been waiting for 7 years. And it passed so fast. It will make the game even more special now, that I'm waiting a decade. I really got involved with some of the forum people and some devs, (I still remember when I first noticed Charlie - it was his post in this (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=326416&an=0&page=0#326416) thread. Just phenomenal. Can you not like guys that explain stuff to kids this politely? I don't think you can.) Anyway it is a really nice trip, and I only hope that DNF won't make a hole in my life when released. Cause it surely filled a lot of space through the last ten years. When the day comes... I'LL FRAG UR ASSES ON DUKEMATCH FAGSS!!!! HAHAHA! - just kidding, I relly suck at multiplayer :(

Nevertheless, I think it'll be a beautyfull day - DNF I mean. But it wouldn't be without Duke 3D wich started it all. Hail to the original king baby. Ten years of kickin alien ass in 3d!!

Haha... that was a crazy thread. The "Bruce Campbell Disses Duke" one was by far the most exhausting internet experience I've ever had. Well tied with one conversation in a developer only board about Resident Evil 4.

I think DNF being out will be a surreal experience for all. I think there will be 3DR developers wandering the halls wondering what to do with themselves, like zombies, heh.

My hardest experience involving threads etc., was to force myself to finnally STFU when I first got my hands on Steam... Geez, it took me so long to put in practice my rational belief that discussing it is just pointless. No matter how much I hate it, some people just don't care or even love it, so yeah it was a challenge. I think it helped me a lot when I deleted HL2 form my computer and came to the conlusion it was some fun, but no story is equal to no buy next time (I mean when someone is actually trying to tell a story or it looks so).

Anyway you got a gift Charlie of just killing with logic. And the more kiddy acting just won't bother to read your bookalike posts haha :)

Well tied with one conversation in a developer only board about Resident Evil 4. My personal lowpoint was a 1-on-1 with Sharp_Invasion on the DNF forum about bot-based Vs. recordable holodukes and which would be the better implementation. Each argument ran into several pages worth of text, even surpassing the largest of your posts according to amazed onlookers. Crazy... and for what? Holodukes, who gives a rat's ass about holodukes?!! *...* Oh wait, I do... :(

OOOOKAY! I completely suck guys, and I'm sorry for going MIA for so long. I got completely distracted and focused elsewhere and since I have a pretty one track mind it's damn near impossible for me to remember to look up every once in a while. :)

I've still got the goods... I've still got to get them signed. But, they *will* be delivered even if a bit late. Like I said... I work for 3DR so that shouldn't be a suprise.

I'm all settled into my new home, and I've finally got internet at home, so I'm going to try and set aside a few hours a week to do personal stuff (emails, writing here, etc) which I've neglected for almost a decade now (no exagerration!). Most of the time I've been at 3DR has been 100% at the office and my free time was either working on bonus stuff for the game or getting out of the office and away from computers entirely. Since my apartment was crap (but cheap!) I never enjoyed spending time there. Now I've got a place that is enjoyable to go to... I'm going to get back to the more balanced way. Which is to say 98% work and 2% me instead of 99.5% work and 0.5% me. ;)

Anyways, I imagine most of you have moved on, but this place isn't meant to be much more than a hole in the wall for a couple of us until things can get hopping with DNF someday. :)

Man, i wish a poster would follow with it (i always wanted an official "something" from 3DR, either to wear (T-shirt) or to hang up my wall (poster)... But i guess that's too much to ask for..

I'm btw glad you got to your new place Charlie... Will you please see if you can make some pics of your new home soon, and put them up here on GIS..? I'm wondering how you live... :D

I avoided putting stuff up about the house publically because there are other guys who live here and I want to respect their privacy as well. I can say that we had a party this weekend with BBQ and swimming, etc. and everyone fell in love with the place.

As for the mouse pad for you and the rest of the stuff for everyone else... hopefully things will make more sense why it has been stalled for so long pretty soon. I'm worried I won't be able to deliver on those promises... at least not exactly as given. I will let you know as soon as I know for sure.

If it doesn't work out then I will look into something different that each person would like... but we'll see.

Not DNF's status, no... that is just fine. My own status has changed though. I'm moving on from 3DR. Unsure exactly what I'll be doing next and right now I'm just enjoying a true vacation with no time pressures and no need to do anything except play around. I took Asmo's advice to the extreme... and now have 100% time for myself. :) I'm kicking the dirt to see what else is out there that I'd be interested in doing once the break is over.

I will miss the team and the project very very VERY much... but it was long past due for me to move on. That is why I couldn't bring myself to do all the signed boxes. I'll be contacting all of the guys who won to see what alternative we can work out.

Thanks for the supportive thoughts guys.

Micki!... unless they restart the project there will be plenty of me still in there. I'm very proud of the work I did while there and I honestly can't express how much the creative freedom 3DR offered meant to me. Anyone who wishes to expand their talents can do so and have a good environment to do so.

Interactivity is my favorite part of FPS games and the main part of the industry I've wanted to have an influence on for years. I was trying to do that while at Ritual on Sin and DNF gave me the chance to push that way beyond what I had imagined... along with having other people to work with who were just as excited by it. George has given tiny tastes in the past of what we were aiming for... and I'll always be proud of the work we put into that and the chance to fully explore those aspects of game development.

Yatta, SyntaxN, and Kaiser... fingers crossed that where ever I do wind up I'll have a less obsessive schedule and can be more active around these parts. I've missed my gaming community roots for a while. :) Making maps for my own enjoyment and releasing them to the public would be a blast. No idea if that will be realistic but it is something I'd love to do again.

Just wanted to pop in and say I admire what you're doing, it's a brave move and is exactly what I have just done with my life! It feels so good to escape the routine sometimes and the release of being your own boss is a nice feeling isn't it? :)

I have just spent the last few months chilling out after working intensly for about 5 years, and in that time gradually let my work consume 99% of my life. But now im doing alot of personal projects which I would never had been able to try before and am enjoying doing bit of freelance on the side.

Anyway good luck with whatever you do with your life mate, and enjoy all ya free time! :)

Charlie, while with 3DR you were like an insurance the game will kick ass... because you're such a true DN fan. I hope they don't throw away even one binary of your input into the game (DNF).

But I'm sure you have your reasons and I wish you the best.
It takes a real man to make a decision like that, and I admire you for that. I'm with you man.

Charlie is the best employee we're ever lost. He will be sorely missed. I wish him the best...

I think it's nice to quote here.

And just one more though, I'm feeling bitter-sweet right now:

BITTER :(

In 3DR Charlie was the natural "bridge" between the fans and the company, perheaps because of his roots, as I see it, the gap between 3DR and the fans will widen even more now... Who will keep telling us (in a believable) way that we have something to wait for? 10 GB's "It's going to be good" doesn't even come close to one Wieder's "It's worth the wait". So the bottom line is quite sad because the true believer abandoned the sheep (sic!) [just kidding I meant "ship", no beast pr0n please]. But seriously, that makes me more interested in Charlie's next project than in DNF.

SWEET :)

I am really happy Charlie had the courage to leave. It's a extremely hard decision after 8 years, and it makes me even happier for the man. You're such a great person Charlie, it was sad seeing you ... tired of the "corporate" stuff.

SUMMARY :) vs :(

DNF is just a game, and Charlie is a great great person, I can't stress this enough. So in my opinion it is really good thing Charlie left, because it sure will be for the better for him (Damn, join the Fallout 3 team at Bethesda so it will be better for me too ;)) As I always bet on people, not on egoistical game desires my summary is: Bitter + Sweet = HIGH FIVE MAN!! :) All the best! :)

Well, that's my essay please give me an A+. Seriously sorry for the long post, but it is the way I feel and I needed to say it... uh type it out loud.

Yours truly.

Charlie Wiederhold
06-06-06, 01:02 PM
Pyr0... unfortunately I can't say anything along those lines. If I say something positive it'll be improperly taken (not necessarily by you), and if I say something negative it'll be improperly taken.

The skydiving was freaking amazing. It's really impossible to put into words. And trust me, if the people that came with us were able to do it, any of you could do it as well. Once you get going you'll never look back. The best part is hanging outside the plane looking down at the 13,500 feet below you and that moment of hesitation right before you are fully detached from the plane.

Once you start falling you lose any sense of actual falling. There wasn't any sense of "my stomach is feeling funny" like you get on a roller coaster since your point of reference isn't changing fast enough. I didn't feel like I was flying though... but it was very free feeling.

I'm trying to get my system setup so I can update my page with the pictures... since I don't have access to Photoshop anymore I'm trying to learn The GIMP to handle the pictures.

I also want to rip the DVD film they made of the jump so you can check that out too. But there's also that whole resume and portfolio thing that is needing to get done, and lounging by the pool, and BBQing stuff... so priorities! :)

Feel free to ask any specific questions and I'll do what I can to answer them though. We are gonna go again this weekend probably. This time we'll get to do more since we've already done it once. And then I'm seriously thinking about doing it solo.

How do you people get to do all this stuff..?! :nipple:

Just make sure you don't splatter to the groiund, or accidently hit a seagull or something... I assume the car accident didn't scare you from extreme activities like this... :p

We get to do stuff like it cause we called 1-800-SKYDIVE and made a reservation. :) It's actually pretty simple and they take very very very good care of you.

The car accidents don't come close to scaring me from adrenaline rush activities. I've said from time to time that the car wrecks were actually very very fun... you just gotta ignore the whole set of things that happened afterwards. :)

Well, that's my essay please give me an A+. Seriously sorry for the long post, but it is the way I feel and I needed to say it... uh type it out loud.

A+++

That's actually an outstanding perspective about the whole ordeal. I loved being part of the natural bridge, but things almost always change over time... sooo. Charlie is now working at Gearbox Software as a associate (sp?) producer on some war game.
In fact he posts a bit at 3dr forums, but unfortunately no updates here... too bad :(

^ Who said Charlie didn't see it? For him a chance to see this photo one more time is tempting enough... I guess... And at least I'm trying. You could too! :ted:

Happy Birthday Duke3D... 11 years now... :)
When i start thinking about it, i can still clearly remember back when i was playing it for the first time 7-8 years ago, it feels strange this much time has passed since then...

Let me take this oppurtunity to say, this competetion has taken precisely 1 year now... not pushing you Charlie, we're all used to waiting (-DNF) afterall

It's just a, reminder... :nipple:

I'm sure neither you or I would mind Alien merchandise instead. But it was a Duke contest. Hmm... tough choice.

Duke decided to celebrate this anniversary a little early this year.

Duke looks better than ever before, i'm happy about that... :D

Alien merchandise would rock too
But if he could actually manage to get a mousepad, and get it signed by Allen from 3DR and himself, i'd be über grateful (he did say once that he might get Allen to do it... that would be great, i love his maps)

high hopes :nipple:
