View Full Version : The future of GiS

Hey guys.

I was wondering what will happen to GiS, now that Charlie had this great change in his life... Will the site still run? Will it grow? Will it evolve into new things?

Pick one:

1. What's your guess?
2. What is your plan?

***instruction
If you're Wieder pick 2, else pick 1.

I think not much will change, if anything at all...
It's not like this website is powered, or supported by 3DR... It's all his Personal website, and it doesn't necessarily have to be associated with 3DR (although, lot's of the info here, is actually from there)

My pick, nothing much will happen... I'll still actively look and post here... I believe Charlie will do so too...

I hope you're right Micki!... I like this place A LOT, and I hope it'll continue to develop. But a lot of inspiration for GiS came from 3DR and, well, DNF. At least that's mine impression.

Well, part of the reason for GiS being made in the first place was because I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be a part of 3DR much longer. Which is why I wanted something besides "wieder3dr.com". :)

No matter what, the front page will be pretty much just whatever is on my mind... which will heavily be based on what I'm working on at the time as well.

When DNF does come out I will still want to be supportive of the community and participating in it. I will also do the same for whatever game I'm on next unless it just isn't the sort of game to have a community. If that is the case then it will depend. I really can't say for sure... but I did make it knowing that chances were pretty good I'd not be at 3DR, though it was still a possibility and thus why I left it pretty open.

I do like to think of it as the ultra deep dark corner of the DNF community. Where the people are so hardcore they've forgotten what life was like before the idea of DNF exist. ;)

I might also do some other sorts of contests based around other games (I'm almost as big a fan of Monkey Island as I am of Duke, for example)... but gotta sort out my promises for the last one first.

That's good. I think this place is a perfect haven from 3DR. I also percieve it as a corner of the DNF community, a very peaceful one for a change :)
I'm preety calm about it now. Thanks for the answer!

We can now use this thread for suggestions or something.

PS. Oh and Monkey Island rules. Especially TSoTMI.

Yeah, this place is a nice little forum... Not too much trafic or anything...
I do miss some more people here though... :nipple:

On the other side, it's easier to have an controlled conversation here. Believe me, small comunities are the best :)

Of course we could use more updates :)

Haha... I know I know! Hopefully it makes sense why I've been off in la-la land for a few months now though. :)

I'm hardcore? The lack of performance in the GiS quiz notwithstanding? Woohoo!

Damn those were some deep questions.

I am just happy there is some activity other then Micki!'s single posts here again(no offense to Micki!) so I have something to read once I have stopped by all the other daily sites I tend to read. And like someone else said small comunites are the best.

It won't go anywhere, this is Charlie's personal site, unless Charlie wants to escape the internet and wind up in Natalie's bed... Though I don't even think he'd give it up then, because how in the hell is he going to brag about it to us? :p

Yeah, it IS pretty dead at times, so i try to create some activity...

Just like i do at Duke4.net...:nipple:

Langsuyar... I've got your page linked from the main menu of my page purely in anticipation of you adding the midget pr0n. So don't go trying to pass that responsibility off on me. :)

I don't see this place becoming a hotbed of activity anytime soon, though... unless I get involved in a project that has an activite mod community.

I'm quite curious what will be your next endeavour (sp?) ?
Makes me wonder if it'll be an FPS or something completely new :o

Micki!

I assume it'll be FPS... That's what he's most familar with anyways, isn't it..?

There are certain parts in DNF, which Charli made, which i'm really impressed with, and i'd really like to see stuff like that in other games as well...

And perhaps, something else then FPS's afterall... :)
I'm not counting on that though... :D

What?? Do you know, or saw that parts of DNF? Or you mean the 2001 build?
What parts are you referring to?

Haha... yeah I'm curious too. Have you been sneaking into the 3DR offices late at night Micki!? ;)

Asmo... as for what is next... action genre for sure. Although an RPG or RTS or the like would be interesting, but not what I lay in bed at night thinking about. :) All the options out there right now are action game oriented, though not all are FPS games.

This specific mixture remind me of something. Something REALLY cool to look forward to: www.projectoffset.com

I wonder if you people are aware of it??
It has so much potential I'm already salivating...

Heh, i'm stalking nobody... (wish i were :p)
I am aware of certain parts of the 2001 build of DNF, which Charlie has made, not the current state, don't worry (at least, i'm very sure about it, through research and suff)... And those certain "parts" that he made, is something i really liked...

If it really WAS Charlie that is, which i believe it was...

I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude on that one. I've seen so many projects come and go like it without ever making a splash.

Actually, that video is old enough now that I don't think anyone will care if I go through it and point out specific stuff I worked on, and it'll be kinda fun for me to take that trip down memory lane.

All the ghost town stuff (donkey + sand worm, EDF guy being blown up by a pipebomb, etc) was my Ghost Town map, which is the same base that the screenshots in 1999 were taken from. Those were the Gus shot and the church shot. The church screenshot is the location that the sandworm came out of the ground to eat the donkey in the video.

Also, if you remember the "developer desktop" (http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/8804/120nv.jpg) screenshot from Voodoo Extreme, that was a very early version of the interior of the church.

The Lake Mead section (jetskis, flying jets, boat turret, crashing through the building) was also something I had worked on. That map is partly responsible for my transition over to almost pure coding. I think there is some footage out there of the Quake 2 version of that map that was shown at a much earlier E3 one time.

Funny note, if you look closely at the jetskis when the turret zooms in on them (late in the video) you can see that we accidentally recorded the footage with some LOD stuff setup incorrectly, so the polys on the riders are all messed up. Doh!

The cockpit riding through a tunnel where you can see Duke's legs. I didn't build the cockpit. Just the very basic tunnel. Well and the gameplay that went with it. I was proud of the solution I came up with to make that section work... but that'll be saved for a much later date, if ever. :)

I had done quite a few of the particle systems as well (not the art, just the functionality). Tripmine explosion that blows up the guy in the blue shirt being chased by an Octabrain, projectile explosions, shrink ray effects, decorations blowing up (like the paint can blowing up and leaving splatters everywhere). Nothing really fancy to write home about, especially compared to particle effects that can be done now, but it was fun and something new and interesting to work on. The bigger flashier effects were usually done by other mappers though for key events (like the mothership blast, pirate ship, ship shooting the Lady Killer sign, etc).

Also the strip club scene at the end with Gus was from one area of the strip club map I had worked on. That map showed up in one of the 1999 screenshots as well, just a different room. Shouldn't be hard to figure out which one. ;)

I think that's about it... I know myself and plenty of the other guys involved in that video are still proud of it to this day. George did a good job coming up with proper pacing for it by learning what works in good movie trailers and applying it to that one, and then we found situations that really showed off the game and Dukeness.

Wow, that's a lot of cool stuff! And it's quite a fun thing to hear "this scene is from this MAP". Perheaps it is because I always thought of the E32001 video as something built from the ground for demonstration purposes... not maps from the actual game.

Now that have changed, and I guess I have a little more faith in DNF again. We'll see. The 2001E3 video was the perfect example of a perfectly done trailer. It hyped you so much you just felt like going to Texas and bashing the door to 3DR offices, ignoring the scared/confused/surprised faces and going straight to a computer to play the game... until the cops arrive. The worst thing about the trailer though, was that it made you believe the game will come within a year or so. Instead there was the media blackout and scrap. It was the worst moment in the entire wait (for me). From 1996 to 2000 it was "It must be so close now" all the time (how shocked I would be if I could tell myself what I know now). The 2001-2002 years were the knife in the heart era. 2002 - 2005 was the era I decided to believe as hard as I can, and I was quite succesful (heh Charlie kept us hyped didn't he?). Since January 2006 my faith somehow dissapeared. I gained this "wait and see" attitude Charlie mentioned above. And now that he left 3DR is more a "wait crossarmed and see" attitude. Oh btw:

I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude on that one. I've seen so many projects come and go like it without ever making a splash.

You did see the videos right? I think they're becoming more and more serious, especially that now they have some more emplyees (for Bioware also) and they managed to actually license their engine to Red Studios. So they should do fine :)

Holy crap, that's loads of interesting stuff Charlie... :D
Thanks for explaining man... B)

I knew you stood for the particle thing, and what i'd like to tell you, was thet i LOVE the way the particles reacted...

One of my favorite moments with particles (except the explosions, they looked awesome too) was the cigar smoke from Graves, and other smoke effects... The smoke was acting so real, like, it was faling, and still "hanging" in the air, like real smoke would do...

Normally, games have it, that smoke must go "up"... But this was really cool...
The ghost town thing is damn cool... I loved the scene with the pipebomb and the guy getting blowed... and the otehr guy who got blown by a laser trip bomb...

I'm still wondering how you guys made the dismembering seem so cool...
Is it just random that the half of the body blew up, or did the explosion REALLY "blow up" that particular part, where an enemy got hit..? (like the legs blown off, if the explosion is happening around the legs etc)

Charlie, would you mind, if we asked you more questions about the trailer..? (not the game back then, just the things in the trailer) :D

PS
The Octabrains rocked... I hope they're still in...

Those, and the Octa-avanger i made... :p (yeah, i'm kidding, but damn that would be fun)
