Here's the official press release from Sega:

SEGA Taps Gearbox Software To Develop Alien Title For Next-Generation Systems

First-Person Shooter to be Based on Motion Picture Franchise

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (December 15, 2006) – SEGA® of America Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the signing of critically-acclaimed developer Gearbox Software to create a first-person shooter title based on the Alien film franchise for the next-generation systems, with license from Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising. The agreement complements the recent announcement of an Alien RPG title for the next-generation systems to be developed by Obsidian Entertainment.

Gearbox Software is a leading developer in the first-person shooter genre, producing titles for the industry’s top franchises including Brothers in Arms, Halo and Half-Life. They consistently produce best-selling titles and have garnered numerous industry awards. Gearbox Software’s FPS Alien title will retain the atmospheric look and feel of the original films while leveraging next-generation technology to create an entirely new interactive Alien experience.

“Gearbox Software has a storied history of bringing innovative and compelling design to the FPS category,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. “Combining their design talents with the intense action of the Alien franchise ensures that gamers will have an immersive and action-packed experience.”

“The Alien series has been a tremendous influence for myself, the people at Gearbox Software and the video games industry in general,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “The opportunity to work with the amazing people at SEGA and Fox to build a next generation video game in the Alien universe is one of those dream projects that is a perfect fit for our capability and our passion.”

Since its 1979 debut, Alien and its three sequels have grossed more than $557 million worldwide, garnering numerous awards, including two Academy Awards®. In 2002, Alien was deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Now tons of questions for Charlie. What would a thread be without questions from good old Kaiser? :D

Charlie, congrats on the exciting project first off!

1.) Is Gearbox taking a "when it's done" stance with this project which means no talking or showing off the title until a later date?

2.) If not, when can we expect pictures?

3.) What platform(s) is the game being developed for?

4.) What are the prospects of having Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henrickson come to Gearbox themselves for voiceover work? I seem to recall reading that Sega is hoping to get their help with the games for the likenesses and voices.

5.) What are your general job duties with the title?

6.) Will Gearbox be soliciting ideas from the gaming community?

7.) Has development been going on for awhile now behind the scenes? How far along is it?

8.) Any projected release date for the title?

Thanks and exciting news! :)

Ok, so does this mean we have to go to cryosleep for 10+ years before we get to play it? ;).

This seriously sounds awsome though and makes me recall GB(or scott maybe) mentioning 3DR getting aproched about an alien game at some point but not doing it becouse of the fact 3dr don't do others ip's. It might just be my bad memory mixing things up though.

I'm somehow hoping you guys will let us smash and otherwise dispose aliens in a lot of interesting ways with the use of interective inviorments rather then just gunning them down.

And coop PLEASE :)

Edit: Duke mousepad + signed Alien game would totaly work as replacement price in the 10th anniversary contest. ;)

Hey guys... tonight is the Gearbox Christmas Party (plus trying to wrap up a milestone) so I can't spend too much time talking about this yet. But this weekend I'll be sure to come chat some more. :)

Glad you are excited... it's been very hard to stay quiet, especially with Micki! being such a big Aliens fan. *grin*

We're really really enjoying this project so far and it was the perfect thing for all of us to be a part of. Gearbox has been a great place for us to plug into and it was almost serendipity that the timing worked out the way it did. The guys we've worked with so far have been awesome, and it's cool to watch the other stuff going on internally evolve.

Prior to coming here we just thought of Gearbox as "Military Shooter guys" and so I was very surprised to see the variety that was available coming up. Exciting time to join up with the company.

I'm so extremely excited over this, and i'm so sad it's probably gonna take some time before i can play it... :( (Parkar's Cryosleep chambers suggestion comes to mind)

Here's my wishlist. You can count on more to come! :D

Right now I'm doing weapons:

Independently targetting Particle-beam phalanx,
Tactical smart-missles,
Phased-plasma pulse-rifles,
Flame thrower,
Smart gun,
Shotgun,
pistol,
minigun,
RPGs,
Sonic-electronic ballbreakers,
nukes,
knives,
sharp sticks.

And to commemorate this thread, I'm now a full-fledged Xenomorph.

Hahahaha :D

I did by the way notice the thread on Gearbox's forums, where people can come with suggestions of what they want in the game..!
I registered, but something with the login went wrong... i notified a Gearbox employee/moderator/admin to fix this for me, or possibly register me manually...

I saw Kaiser there, i hope some of you others are there too :D

Glad you'll finally be able to talk about it a little bit now, Charlie!

I have really high hopes for this one - we've been far too long without another quality Alien shooter.

I just hope that I get to play as an alien like back in AvP (sans the horrible netplay)

Aliens..... no one wants to be an alien there ugly and stupid but they would uber pwn. The melee would be sweet and some acid spitting would be nice also but theres nothin better than owning a foreign alien race then with a good old marine. :) Now playin as a predator that would be sweet.lol

Micki!

Aliens are not stupid, they are intelligent... that's proven in the movies, and also in the games

Of course thier intelligence doesn't match that of a human... that would be like comparing humans with dogs...

The aliens are not just big insects, they can think, and decide... Like shown in the second movie, Aliens...

And about thier looks, of course they're ugly, but thier design is extremely cool
Wouldn't be no fun if Aliens had all smooth skin, and looked more or less like a human... that's not scary...

I loved controlling ALiens in the AVP games... gave me the feel of controlling something that is superior tio Humans in certain ways, as long i'm doing things right (intelligence that said... don't just act without a single thought first)

Anyways, don't expect Predators at all... it's no AVP game afterall...

But man, i'm hoping for an AVP3... that would be so very awesome...

I think gearbox should probably do a follow up to Aliens by making a GOOD predator game not like the one by Uv games "predator:concrete jungle" I mean it wasnt horrible but it wasnt good either. Anyways back to aliens the gearbox company could actually be one of the first to do some justice to the aliens license because so many developers have screwed up with it big time. But i would totally buy Aliens it just sucks i got to wait such a long time...lol..Why do games take so long to make :(

Yeah yeah yeah... I was talking to Micki! and let him know I've got the notes ready for a few more updates... just gotta set the time aside. Another milestone delivery soon which will leave some extra time open again to set aside a night of writing.

Glad you're excited Asmo, I think it's going to be something you guys will enjoy a lot. :)
